I passed the store with a huff of longing. The window was filled with the regular, beautiful persocoms, mocking me. Jace caught my look to it and punched my shoulder.
"What's the matter with you, dumbass? Why don't you just go out and buy one? You have the money," He said exasperatedly as he stopped me in front of the humming building. He didn't understand.
"I don't know, I just don't have the time..." I said, rubbing the back of my neck nervously. I didn't need Jace throwing a fit out here in public. Others passed by us, giving us evil looks as they went around.
"That's no excuse!" He countered, raising his voice. "You seriously need a life, Khay. Tress is the best thing that happened to me!" I had no reply to that, I knew it was true. Jace was in pretty tough times before he bought her; body constantly full of drugs, apartment filled to the brim with alcohol. But then she came along and...changed him. Changed him for the better of course, but I still hated when we sat in the pub together, him with a soda and me with a beer.
"I guess I'm just not ready..." I said quietly, avoiding his burning gaze.
"You're impossible!" He said, throwing his hands in the air and walking away. I pushed my glasses farther up my nose as I followed. "You could at least admit you're scared, nervous. I get it." He still didn't understand.

Chapter 1 (continued)
"It's not that..." I said, struggling to keep up with his fast pace. He straightened his high jacket collar and pretended not to be with the nerd behind him.
"What is it then?" He asked, not turning to look at me. I knew his dark chocolate eyes would be hard and still blazing now, and I was glad I wasn't in their view.
"I just don't think I deserve one...any one..." I said, shrugging. This, of course, was the real reason I held back, why I didn't go out and simply buy one. My expression turned sad and solemn as I stared at the ground as I walked a bit slower. I heard a sigh in front of me and he stopped. I didn't realize we were in an alley until now, far out of downtown London. The quiet suggested it was his neighborhood, where he was safe to turn around to face me.
"Oh come on. You got the highest score in our entire school on those finals. You have a job, unlike most people in this rotten city. You have a small, but comfortable apartment. And you have money to spare for a persocom, a couple actually. You have an amazing life, if not a lonely one. You work hard. Of course you deserve one, after all those jobs well done."
"You don't understand. I-" He interrupted me with a finger as his phone buzzed. He checked it and sighed.
"I got to go. Promise me you won't sulk tonight like you always do!" He said as he ran off, heading to a pale, small house, its windows softly lit. I shook my head and sighed, turning around and heading back toward the city. He doesn't understand, and he makes no effort to. What do I expect, though? I thought in frustration as I shuffled through dirty puddles and dark alleyways. I didn't see the girl racing towards me until it was too late.
